Frequently Asked Questions
Are three stone engagement rings in style?
Very much so, and they have been climbing for several years now. Part of it is that a few high profile engagements put the style back in front of everyone, but the reason it sticks is that a three stone ring solves a real problem: it gives you presence across the finger without requiring one enormous center diamond. Tapered baguettes and half moon side stones are what our customers ask for most right now, with pear shaped sides close behind. Oval and emerald cut centers pair best with them. If you want a ring that looks substantial and means something specific, this is the collection to start in.
What do the three stones in an engagement ring represent?
Past, present, and future, most commonly, with the larger center stone standing for right now and the two flanking stones for where you have been and where you are going. A second reading, friendship, love, and fidelity, has been around nearly as long. Some couples assign their own: two families joining around a shared life, or three chapters of a relationship. The meaning is not fixed by any tradition we would defend as ancient, and honestly, the flexibility is the appeal. Couples like being able to explain their ring in their own words rather than reciting something out of a brochure
How much does a three stone engagement ring cost?
Three stone settings here start around $1,800 and mostly land between about $2,840 and $5,900, with the middle near $4,300 and our most elaborate pieces reaching about $12,750. Those prices include the two side stones, which is worth understanding, because the side stones are a meaningful part of the cost. Well-matched tapered baguettes or half moons take skill to source and set. That also means the finished ring often costs less than you would expect, since you can pair a modest center with substantial sides and still get real width across the finger. Our ring builder totals it as you choose
Are three stone engagement rings durable for everyday wear?
Generally yes, with attention to the side stones. They sit at the outer edges of the setting, which is exactly where a ring hits doorframes and countertops, so they take more abuse than the protected center. Shapes with points or corners, like pears, marquises, and trillions, need V-prongs to shield those tips, and any reputable setting will have them. Baguettes are usually channel or bar set, which is quite secure. The practical upshot is an annual prong check, which we do under magnification, and taking the ring off for the gym and yard work. Platinum settings hold side stones best over the long run.
Can three stone engagement rings be resized?
Usually, and often more easily than you would think, because the stones are concentrated at the top of the ring and the bottom of the band is typically plain metal. That gives our jewelers clean material to cut and rejoin. Where it gets harder is when pave runs down the shoulders toward the base, which limits how much can be removed. Sizing up more than a size or two can also subtly change how the side stones sit, so we prefer to get it right initially. We size in house in Williamsville, so bring it to us and we will tell you honestly what the ring can take.
How do you clean a three stone engagement ring?
Three stones mean six or more places for lotion and soap to collect, especially in the tight gaps where the side stones meet the center. Soak the ring twenty to thirty minutes in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap, then brush with a soft toothbrush from underneath, working along the gaps between the stones. The undersides are where the dullness actually lives. Rinse with the drain closed and dry with a lint-free cloth. Avoid bleach, chlorine, and acetone. Twice a year, bring it in for an ultrasonic clean, which reaches into those junctions in a way a brush cannot.
Can you mix different diamond shapes in a three stone engagement ring?
Yes, and the best three stone rings usually do. Round centers with tapered baguette sides is the classic combination. Oval or emerald centers with trapezoid or half moon sides read more contemporary. Pear side stones angled outward create movement, and matched pear sides around a round center is one of the prettiest things we sell. The rule that actually matters is proportion, not shape: the side stones should measure roughly a quarter to a third of the center's spread, or the ring looks either cluttered or unbalanced. Most of these are made to order, so bring us a combination and our jewelers will tell you whether it will work.
What is the best side stone shape for a three stone engagement ring?
It depends on the effect you want, though we can be more useful than that. Tapered baguettes give the cleanest, most classic look and draw the eye straight to the center. Trapezoids and half moons sit flush against the center stone and make the ring read wider and more modern. Pears and marquises add sparkle and drama but need V-prongs on the tips and catch on fabric slightly more. If the center is an elongated shape, half moons usually flatter it best. Come try two or three combinations on in the showroom, because this is one decision that photographs poorly and reads instantly in person.
