Frequently Asked Questions
Why are yellow gold engagement rings suddenly trending again for modern brides?
Yellow gold is the biggest metal shift we have seen in years. After roughly two decades where white gold and platinum dominated the case, yellow has come back strongly, and it now shows up in a real share of our engagement ring orders both online and in the showroom. Part of it is the broader appetite for vintage and antique inspired design, which yellow gold suits far better than white. Part of it is that yellow flatters warm skin tones and makes a diamond look warmer. And practically, yellow gold never needs re-plating, which white gold does. If you passed on yellow years ago, look again.
What is the traditional meaning and symbolism behind a gold wedding ring?
Gold is the oldest material in this business, and the symbolism is genuinely ancient rather than invented for marketing. It does not tarnish, corrode, or degrade, which made it the natural metal for a promise intended to last, and that association runs through Roman betrothal rings straight to the present. Its warmth and value made it a way of saying the commitment was worth something real. Yellow gold in particular carries the weight of that continuity, since it is gold in its natural color rather than alloyed toward white. If tradition is what appeals to you, this is the most traditional choice available.
Is a gold engagement ring cheaper than a platinum ring setting?
Yes, typically. Platinum is considerably denser than gold, so the same design requires more material by weight, and it is harder to work, which adds labor. Both push the price up. Across our collections, gold settings mostly run between about $2,738 and $4,698, with the middle near $3,350, while platinum settings mostly sit between about $2,710 and $5,330. So, the ranges overlap substantially, and the difference on any given design is real but rarely dramatic. It is usually not enough to be the deciding factor. Choose the metal you prefer the look of and let our team price the same design in both.
Which is more durable for an everyday ring 14k or 18k gold?
Fourteen karat, and this is one of the few metal questions with a clear answer. Fourteen karat gold is 58.5 percent pure gold alloyed with harder metals, while eighteen karat is 75 percent pure. Pure gold is soft, so the higher the karat, the softer and more easily scratched or bent the ring. Fourteen karat resists daily wear noticeably better and costs less. Eighteen karat gives you a richer, deeper color and a slightly more luxurious feel, which some people rightly prefer. For an engagement ring worn every day, especially by someone active or working with their hands, we usually recommend fourteen.
How do you pick the right band width for a gold ring?
Width shows more on yellow gold than on white metals, since the warm color itself becomes a feature as the surface grows. A slim band between 1.6 and 1.8 millimeters gives a hint of gold and makes the center stone read larger by comparison, which suits smaller hands. From about 2.5 millimeters upward, the gold becomes the statement, which holds up better on a larger hand and pairs well with vintage detailing. There is also comfort to consider, since wider bands feel more substantial and some people find them warmer on the finger. Try two or three widths on, because gold photographs badly and reads correctly only in person.
What is the safest way to clean a gold diamond ring at home?
Warm water, a few drops of mild dish soap, and twenty minutes of soaking handles most of it, then a soft toothbrush on the underside of the setting where lotion and soap collect and where light enters the stone. Rinse with the drain closed and dry with a lint-free cloth. Keep gold away from chlorine, bleach, and ammonia-based cleaners, which attack the alloy metals rather than the gold itself and can weaken prongs over time. Take the ring off before pools and hot tubs. Twice a year, bring it in and we will run it through the ultrasonic and check the prongs on the bench.
Can I customize a gold setting with different colored metal prongs?
Yes, and two-tone is one of the most requested changes we make. White gold or platinum prongs on a yellow gold band keep the diamond looking bright and white while the band supplies warmth, which solves the main objection people have to yellow gold. You can also run a white gold halo on a yellow band or reverse the whole thing. Yellow gold takes milgrain and hand engraving particularly well, since the warm tone throws more shadow into the cuts. Most of these settings are made to order, so tell our jewelers the combination you want and they will build toward it.
What is the difference between yellow white and rose gold engagement rings?
All three start as the same yellow gold and differ in what is alloyed into them. Yellow gold is alloyed with copper and silver in balance and keeps gold's natural warm color. White gold adds white metals like palladium or nickel and is then plated with rhodium for a bright silver finish, which wears thin over years and needs re-plating to stay crisp. Rose gold adds more copper, producing the pink tone, and is slightly harder than the other two while never needing plating. Cost is essentially identical across all three at the same karat. It comes down entirely to which one you like on your hand.
