Antique & Vintage Styled Engagement Rings

Vintage-inspired styles are one of the strongest categories in our showroom, and interest keeps building. Part of it is fatigue with rings that all look alike online. A vintage design has details you have to look at closely, which is exactly the opposite of a style optimized for a thumbnail. Milgrain edges, hand engraving, and filigree galleries are what customers ask for by name. Continuity, mostly. Choosing a design language from the 1920s or the Victorian era is a way of saying your relationship belongs to a longer story rather than to this particular year. Couples with a strong sense of family often gravitate here, as do people who inherited a ring and want something that speaks the same visual language. There is also a quieter appeal: a vintage ring signals that you chose deliberately rather than picking whatever was trending. We have been on the same street in Williamsville since 1952, so we have a certain sympathy for things built to outlast a fashion cycle.

Vintage inspired settings here mostly run between about $2,590 and $5,310, with the middle near $3,710, a floor around $1,650, and the most detailed pieces reaching about $11,000. Those are setting prices, without the center stone. The cost sits in the handwork. Milgrain, engraving, and filigree are all labor intensive and cannot be rushed, which is why a vintage-style setting costs more than a plain one of equal metal weight. Because you buy the setting separately, a modest, well-cut center stone in a richly detailed vintage setting is often the best value in the store.

Reasonably, with a few honest caveats. Filigree, the fine openwork under and around the stone, is the most delicate element and can bend if the ring takes a hard knock. Milgrain, the tiny beaded edge, softens gradually over decades of wear, which most owners come to like. Engraving does the same. None of this makes a vintage ring fragile; it just means the detail ages rather than staying factory sharp. Platinum holds fine detail better than gold because it displaces metal rather than losing it. An annual check with us catches bent filigree and loose accent stones long before they become expensive.

Usually, but it needs a jeweler who works on this kind of ring regularly. Cutting and rejoining a band interrupts milgrain, engraving, or filigree, and all of it has to be re-cut across the seam by hand to disappear properly. Done well the join is invisible. Done badly you will see it every day for the rest of the ring's life. Rings decorated all the way around are more limited, sometimes to half a size. Gently, and more often than you would clean a plain ring, because every engraved line and filigree opening collects lotion and soap. Soak the ring twenty to thirty minutes in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap, then use a soft toothbrush with light pressure, working along the engraving rather than across it and taking care around any openwork. Rinse with the drain closed and dry with a lint free cloth. Never use abrasive polishing cloths or pastes, which round over milgrain beads and flatten fine detail permanently. Bring it in twice a year for an ultrasonic clean, which lifts residue out of the filigree properly.

Yes, and most of these settings are made to order. Metal is your choice in fourteen and eighteen karat white, yellow, and rose gold, or platinum. Yellow and rose gold read more authentically period, and rose gold in particular throws warm shadow into engraved detail. We can adjust the level of milgrain, change the gallery underneath, or swap the center for an oval, cushion, or emerald cut, all of which look more of the era than a modern round. Everything in this collection is newly made in a vintage style, not an estate piece, and we would rather say that plainly than let anyone assume otherwise. That is usually the better deal for a ring you intend to wear daily. A new setting means modern prong construction, a center stone you choose yourself with current grading, metal that has not already spent eighty years thinning on someone's hand, and the ability to size and repair it normally.
