Frequently Asked Questions
Why are round cut engagement rings the most popular style for couples?
Round brilliant is the most requested shape in the world and the largest collection we carry, with 268 settings built for it. The reason is optical rather than fashionable. The fifty seven facet round brilliant was mathematically designed to return the maximum amount of light back through the top of the stone, so a well cut round is simply the brightest diamond you can buy. It also has no corners or points to protect, works in any setting style ever made, and will never look dated. If you want the shape that has the least chance of being second guessed in twenty years, this is it.
What is the deeper meaning and symbolism of a round diamond ring?
A circle with no beginning and no end, which is the same symbolism carried by the wedding band itself and the oldest idea in the business. Couples read it as eternity, wholeness, or a commitment without conditions. There is a nice consistency to a round stone sitting on a round band, and plenty of our customers choose it precisely because the symbolism needs no explanation. Beyond that, the round brilliant carries a kind of cultural weight from being the default for a century. Choosing it reads as classic rather than as playing safe, at least in our experience.
Why do round diamonds cost more than princess cut rings?
Two reasons, both structural. Cutting a round brilliant from rough crystal wastes considerably more material than cutting a square shape, since the cutter is carving a circle out of an octahedron and discarding the rest. And round is the most in demand shape by a wide margin, so the market supports a premium. A princess cut keeps far more of the original rough, which is why it costs less per carat for comparable quality. Loose stone prices change constantly, so we will not put a percentage on it, but the gap is real and consistent. Compare both live in our ring builder.
Will a round diamond ring snag or chip easily during daily wear?
Round is the most forgiving shape there is, because it has no corners, points, or thin edges needing protection. Diamond is the hardest material in jewelry, and what actually endangers any stone is a hard direct impact rather than routine wear. The variable with a round is the setting height, not the stone. A tall six-prong solitaire lifts the diamond up where it is more susceptible to catching on sweaters and doorframes, while a lower profile or bezel setting tucks it down. If you want a round and work with your hands, ask us about lower settings. Have prongs checked annually either way.
How do I choose the right finger coverage with a round diamond?
Coverage is about millimeter spread rather than carat weight, and the two are not the same thing. A round diamond spreads less across the finger than an oval or marquise of equal weight, since more of its mass sits in depth below the surface. These three tips help. A slimmer band, around 1.6 to 1.8 millimeters, makes the stone read larger by comparison. A halo widens the footprint substantially without increasing center carat weight. And a cathedral setting adds height that reads as presence. Come in and try the same carat weight in a couple of setting styles. The difference is much larger than people expect.
What is the correct way to clean a round diamond setting at home?
Warm water, a few drops of mild dish soap, and twenty minutes of soaking will handle most of it. Then brush the underside of the setting with a soft toothbrush, because the haze that dulls a diamond is lotion, sunscreen, and soap collecting beneath the stone where light enters. Working on the top face does almost nothing. Rinse with the drain closed and dry with a lint-free cloth. Skip bleach, acetone, and chlorine, which attack the alloys in gold. Twice a year bring it in and we will run it through the ultrasonic, steam it, and check the prongs while it is on the bench.
Can I customize a round setting with different metal colors or prongs?
Yes, and round centers give you the widest choice in the store simply because every setting style ever designed accommodates them. Metal comes in fourteen and eighteen karat white, yellow, and rose gold, and platinum. Two-tone is popular, often with yellow gold prongs on a white gold band, which subtly warms the stone. Prong count is a real decision: four prongs show more of the diamond's outline, while six hold more securely and look slightly more traditional. We can also lower the head for everyday practicality or add a hidden halo. Most of these settings are made to order, so tell us what you want.
How do I select the best cut grade for a round diamond?
Cut is the one grade worth being strict about, because it determines how much light the diamond actually returns. Round brilliants are the only shape with a standardized cut grade, so use it. Stay at Excellent, or Ideal, depending on the lab, and do not compromise there to buy more carat weight. A well-cut one carat will noticeably outshine a poorly cut one and a half in any lighting forever. You can be far more relaxed about color and clarity, where a grade or two down is usually invisible to the naked eye and saves real money. Come compare cut grades in person. It is the most convincing five minutes in jewelry.
