Hand Engraved

They are a smaller, devoted corner of the market, and the people who want one usually want nothing else. Hand engraving is the detail that makes a ring look like it has a history, so it draws customers who are after a vintage or heirloom character rather than a contemporary look. Our engraved settings are the ones our customers most often fall for once they see the work under a loupe. Scrollwork, wheat patterns, and fine milgrain edges are the common motifs. If you have been scrolling past rings that all look alike, engraving is usually what has been missing.

Time and intention, more than any specific motif. Someone sat at a bench and cut those lines individually with a graver, which is a slow, unforgiving job, and that effort is legible in the finished ring. Traditional patterns carry their own associations if you want them: wheat for abundance, scrollwork for continuity, laurel for endurance. Many couples read it more simply as craftsmanship, a ring made by a person rather than a machine. It is also a natural fit for anyone drawn to the idea of an heirloom, since hand engraving is the language antique rings were written in.

Hand engraved settings here mostly run between about $3,330 and $5,930, with the middle near $4,480 and the most detailed pieces climbing past $11,000. Those are setting prices, without the center stone. Engraved settings cost more than comparable plain ones for a straightforward reason: the hours. There is no way to speed up a hand cut pattern, and the finer the work the longer it takes. Some of our designer vintage inspired pieces sit at the upper end. Because you are buying the setting separately, you can put a modest, well cut center stone into an extraordinarily detailed setting, which is often the smartest way to shop this collection.

Gradually, yes, and it is worth knowing up front. Engraving is metal cut away, so decades of rubbing against skin and other rings will soften the crispest lines, particularly on the inside edges and the bottom of the band. Most owners come to like this. Worn engraving is exactly what gives genuine antique rings their character. If you prefer it sharp, platinum holds detail better than gold because it displaces rather than loses metal, and our jewelers can re-cut a worn pattern on the bench to bring it back. Taking the ring off before the gym and heavy manual work slows the wear considerably

Usually, but it needs a jeweler who understands engraving, which is not every jeweler. Cutting and rejoining the band interrupts the pattern, so the engraving has to be re-cut across the seam by hand to make the join disappear. Done well it is invisible. Done poorly you can see exactly where the ring was opened, forever. Rings engraved all the way around are harder and sometimes limited to half a size. We do this work in house in Williamsville, NY rather than shipping it out, and we would rather size it right the first time, so get the finger measured properly before ordering.

The engraved channels collect polish residue, lotion, and soap, and once they fill in, the pattern stops reading as depth and just looks grey. Soak the ring twenty to thirty minutes in warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap, then work a soft toothbrush along the direction of the engraving rather than across it. Rinse with the drain closed and dry with a lint free cloth. Never use abrasive polishing cloths or pastes, which round over the fine edges that make the work look sharp. Bring it to us twice a year for an ultrasonic clean, which lifts residue out of the cuts properly.

Yes. Most of these settings are made to order, so metal, center stone, and often the pattern itself are all decisions. Fourteen and eighteen karat white, yellow, and rose gold are available, along with platinum, which we recommend if crisp detail matters to you long term. Rose gold suits engraving especially well because the warm tone throws more shadow into the cuts. Swapping the center for an oval, cushion, or emerald cut is routine and often looks more period appropriate than a round. Our jewelers can also add a personal engraving inside the band, which is the cheapest meaningful upgrade in the store.

Hand engraving is cut with a graver held by a person, so every line has slight variation in depth and angle, and the walls of the cut catch light unevenly. That is what produces the shimmer you see in antique work. Machine engraving, whether rotary or laser, is uniform and shallower, faster to produce, and cheaper. Under a loupe the difference is unmistakable, and to be fair, at arm's length many people cannot tell. What you are paying for with hand work is depth, longevity, and the fact that it can be re-cut decades from now.
