How does the diamond rating scale work?
Before getting into what H-colored diamonds are, we need to understand how diamonds are even graded in the first place.
When grading diamonds, expert jewelers opt to use a tool called the GIA color scale. The GIA color scale assesses the diamond based on its color to determine its value, with the grade decreasing based on its position in the alphabet.
For instance, if a diamond is white and bright in color, it will receive a grade of D.
This is because the scale only begins at D and then follows through to Z.
If a diamond rates towards the lower end of the alphabet, this will mean that the diamond has a more yellow appearance or tint.
Finding a higher appearance diamond is incredibly rare, and you can bet this impacts the price of these diamonds dramatically.
The further down the scale and more available the diamond means it will retail at a much cheaper cost.
However, wherever they land on the scale, they are still diamonds, and having a lower color scale diamond is a way to have access to these beautiful stones even if your budget is tighter.
What is a H-color diamond?
So, H-color diamonds seem to place really high on that scale if we’re considering the alphabet as their positioning?
Yes, they do. In fact, they are part of the “near-colorless” range of diamonds available, which means they are teetering on super rare.
However, they do have a slight yellow tinge when placed at a 45-degree angle or from the side, but unless you’re a gemologist, you’re unlikely ever to notice this tint, and to the naked eye, they will appear white and bright.
How much does a H color diamond cost?
If they are so beautiful and almost entirely colorless, this must mean they are scarce and must cost a fortune.
Well, there are still a few factors to take into account when it comes to the cost of a H-color diamond, and these usually include the cut, clarity, and carat weight.
If you get an ideal or excellent cut, you will actually find H-colored diamonds that can be incredible value for your money.
For instance, a round cut H color the same size, cut grade, and clarity as a D-graded diamond could save you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars while still maintaining a relatively similar appearance.
In fact, it can often be hard to tell much difference unless the diamonds are side by side - but that’s unlikely to ever happen!
So, if you’re looking to save some money to put towards a honeymoon or spend on perhaps a couple more rings to create a stack of rings, a H-color diamond could be the best option to get the most for your money.
Best shapes for H color diamonds
Round Shapes will always be a winner –this is because round shapes reflect the most light and always look magnificent. They barely show any color difference, and many experts would suggest never even going above a H grade when it comes to a round cut. So, if you’re looking for a round diamond, a H grade is your best bet for the most beautiful results.
Most Shapes Go –The best thing about a H-grade diamond is they are so versatile, so much so that they will work well for almost all shapes.
The best shapes are Radiant, Oval, Pear, and Princess cuts (the shapes with more facets). It is best to avoid others as you may see a slight shift in color appearance, but with the suggestions here, you’ll be spoilt for choice anyway!
Best settings for H color diamonds
Consider Side Stone and Pave Settings –these setting styles often incorporate smaller diamonds or stones pave or prong set on the sides of the ring. They can help make the main stone stand out more and can help deflect from yellowness.
If you opt for a solitaire setting, you needn’t worry; the diamond will shine for itself as it’s the only stone in the ring.
Best metal combinations for H color diamond?
White, platinum, or silver-colored metals –these are great options and will allow your diamond to really shine and be center stage.
