There are a lot of shiny things that might grab your attention when it comes to purchasing a ring for that special occasion, but how do you know what to pick?

If you’re about to embark on your very own picture-perfect fairytale with the person of your dreams, you want every single part of your story to be utterly sensational.

But don’t forget the most important, and, oh, the most exciting part - the engagement, the engagement ring and the sparkling little number it comes adorned with.

With so many things to consider, you’re probably going to come up against phrases and terms you’ve encountered before.

From getting hitched, tying the knot, making an honest/man or woman of someone to finding Mr/Mrs. Right.

“Congratulations, you’ve finally found the one.”

“Amazing news on your engagement!”

“Let me see the ring!”

Ah, the ring!

For your Mr/Mrs. Right, you best be choosing a ring and/or diamond befitting of your soulmate.

“Have you considered a H-colored diamond?” might be a phrase you haven’t been quite familiar with.

And here’s why you should get familiar and consider it as an option when planning your engagement.

How does the diamond rating scale work?

Before getting into what H-colored diamonds are, we need to understand how diamonds are even graded in the first place.

When grading diamonds, expert jewelers opt to use a tool called the GIA color scale. The GIA color scale assesses the diamond based on its color to determine its value, with the grade decreasing based on its position in the alphabet.

For instance, if a diamond is white and bright in color, it will receive a grade of D.

This is because the scale only begins at D and then follows through to Z.

If a diamond rates towards the lower end of the alphabet, this will mean that the diamond has a more yellow appearance or tint.

Finding a higher appearance diamond is incredibly rare, and you can bet this impacts the price of these diamonds dramatically.

The further down the scale and more available the diamond means it will retail at a much cheaper cost.

However, wherever they land on the scale, they are still diamonds, and having a lower color scale diamond is a way to have access to these beautiful stones even if your budget is tighter.

What is a H-color diamond?

So, H-color diamonds seem to place really high on that scale if we’re considering the alphabet as their positioning?

Yes, they do. In fact, they are part of the “near-colorless” range of diamonds available, which means they are teetering on super rare.

However, they do have a slight yellow tinge when placed at a 45-degree angle or from the side, but unless you’re a gemologist, you’re unlikely ever to notice this tint, and to the naked eye, they will appear white and bright.

How much does a H color diamond cost?

If they are so beautiful and almost entirely colorless, this must mean they are scarce and must cost a fortune.

Well, there are still a few factors to take into account when it comes to the cost of a H-color diamond, and these usually include the cut, clarity, and carat weight.

If you get an ideal or excellent cut, you will actually find H-colored diamonds that can be incredible value for your money.

For instance, a round cut H color the same size, cut grade, and clarity as a D-graded diamond could save you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars while still maintaining a relatively similar appearance.

In fact, it can often be hard to tell much difference unless the diamonds are side by side - but that’s unlikely to ever happen!

So, if you’re looking to save some money to put towards a honeymoon or spend on perhaps a couple more rings to create a stack of rings, a H-color diamond could be the best option to get the most for your money.

Best shapes for H color diamonds

Round Shapes will always be a winner –this is because round shapes reflect the most light and always look magnificent. They barely show any color difference, and many experts would suggest never even going above a H grade when it comes to a round cut. So, if you’re looking for a round diamond, a H grade is your best bet for the most beautiful results.

Most Shapes Go –The best thing about a H-grade diamond is they are so versatile, so much so that they will work well for almost all shapes.

The best shapes are Radiant, Oval, Pear, and Princess cuts (the shapes with more facets). It is best to avoid others as you may see a slight shift in color appearance, but with the suggestions here, you’ll be spoilt for choice anyway!

Best settings for H color diamonds

Consider Side Stone and Pave Settings –these setting styles often incorporate smaller diamonds or stones pave or prong set on the sides of the ring. They can help make the main stone stand out more and can help deflect from yellowness.

If you opt for a solitaire setting, you needn’t worry; the diamond will shine for itself as it’s the only stone in the ring.

Best metal combinations for H color diamond?

White, platinum, or silver-colored metals –these are great options and will allow your diamond to really shine and be center stage.

It’s incredibly difficult to notice the yellow tinges to the naked eye, as previously mentioned, so any metal coloring is possible when it comes to your H-grade diamond.

Yellow-toned and rose gold metals –choosing yellow gold, rose gold or champagne-colored metal is a great option when it comes to setting your H-colored diamond. Doing this will make the diamond more brilliant while encompassing a warmer overall tone.

Also, by upping the karat of the  yellow gold to 18K, it will mask the diamond color even more!

Is it possible to make a H color diamond look whiter?

Diamond cut possibly has the most influence over the appearance of your H color diamond.

When looking for a diamond, ensure that you search for “excellent cut” on the diamond grading reports. If the overall cut grade is below excellent, you must make sure the symmetry of the diamond is excellent as this will reflect white bright light.

Choosing a highly reflective cut such as a round cut has the best chance of appearing whiter as it reflects more light and appears shinier.

This is also helped by setting the diamond in white gold, platinum, or a silver colored metal, as other colors can permeate the appearance of the diamond.

For an extra pro-tip, we suggest going for an 18K yellow gold which will give your diamond a warmer glow.

Are H color diamonds worth buying?

Absolutely they are!

After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and H-color diamonds are some of the most popular on the market, mainly due to their versatility.

This means that regardless of your style or what shape and design you want for your ring, you are almost guaranteed to find a result that matches exactly what you are looking for.

And what’s more, at a much lower price than a diamond graded between D-F.

If you’re concerned about the appearance of your H-colored diamond, the tips above exemplify how you can get your desired outcome.

The best tip to take on board is setting your ring with a warmer metal – this will hide any yellow color you may see, but unless you have the eyes of an eagle, no matter what choice you make, you’re very unlikely to see any yellow tones in the diamond at all.

If you’re unsure, why not try before you buy?

You can visit us at our Ben Garelick store and try as many different diamond types as you like. You can also take advantage of seeing them side by side and in different cuts and settings. This way you’ll be able to decide for yourself.

If you can’t make it to the store, you can check out our diamond list online where you can virtually build your engagement ring online with 360 degree videos of H colored diamonds. Also, hop on chat and we can send you additional videos of any other sizes and shapes of H colored diamonds you may want to see.

What are H-colored diamonds suitable for?

Absolutely everything!

A general gift

Even if you’re not getting married and looking to give a lasting gift that would mean the world to someone, then a H-colored diamond is the answer you’re looking for. In fact, for most jewelry, the majority of diamonds used are between F, G and H color.

It could be for a birthday or Mother’s Day gift – and what says I love you Mom more than her very own diamond?

No matter what grade, diamonds are indeed a girl's best friend, and if you want to make her heart swell, she’ll never forget receiving a beautiful piece with a gorgeous diamond set in it.

A promise ring

Maybe you’re building up to a higher grade ring like you’re building up to the commitment of marriage with your one true love.

Opting for a H-colored grade promise ring is the most fantastic way to show your significant other you are truly serious about them.

And if you’re young and in love, they are a far more affordable way to say I love you:

 An engagement ring

We’ve spoken about engagement rings throughout this blog, so you know we’re pretty serious about giving H-grade diamonds for engagements.

They are undoubtedly the most popular diamond for any couple and the perfect way to get the desired look you want without completely breaking the bank!

A wedding ring

Many people go for a completely plain metal or simple band for their actual wedding ring, but why not dare to be different and add a diamond in there?

In our opinion, you should never run out of reasons to wear diamonds, and your wedding ring is the quintessential reason.

If you’ve already splashed out on a more expensive diamond for the engagement ring, selecting a band with H-colored diamonds already set in the wedding ring can keep the trend going without being too costly.

Here are some wedding rings that we think would look absolutely magnificent when set with a H-graded diamond:

An anniversary ring

Just because the wedding is over doesn’t mean the love is.

Don’t forget to keep sharing the love, especially on your anniversary, and love shared with a diamond is a love that’ll last a lifetime.

You could adorn many jewelry items with a diamond, from pendants and necklaces to cufflinks and bracelets.

You don’t have to stop with a ring.

The Takeaways

What we want and what we think we want are often totally separate things.

When buying their first diamonds or purchasing an engagement ring, most people don’t understand how diamonds are graded or where they get their value from.

They want the most significant, shiniest diamond in the store and get shocked when they see the price tag.

They can sometimes feel let down or like they can’t give the perfect engagement ring their partner deserves.

Unfortunately, some people get pressured into spending more money on diamonds than they need to or fall victim due to not having all the facts.

At Ben Garelick, we want to educate our clients, and we want them to find exactly what they are looking for without paying more than they can afford or even need.

It’s all about what you want, how you want it to look, and how you want to feel when you look at the ring or piece of jewelry.

H-graded diamonds are some of our favorites and always leave clients with beaming smiles which means we can’t recommend them enough.

But you don’t just have to take our word for it; you can come and look at as many diamonds as you like (sounds like a perfect day to us!), try them on in the comfort of your own home or view them on the website.

Whatever you choose, we’re sure you’ll find a diamond to fall in love with and one that you can’t help but show off to the whole world.
