What is a Moissanite?

  • Moissanite is a naturally occurring mineral discovered over a century ago by Dr. Henri Moisson at the site of a meteor strike in Arizona. Also known as silicon carbide, it took decades of research for scientists to find the perfect thermal growing process that creates large, jewelry quality Moissanites, named for their Nobel Prize winning discoverer.
  • Moissanite is a distinct and unique gem, synthesized by man, with its own properties which make it perfect for jewelry.
  • Measured nearly as hard as diamonds, moissanite's durability makes it an excellent gem for rings and other jewelry that will be worn often. Resistant to scratching, breakage and heat, moissanites are created to be enjoyed for years. Moissanites can be cleaned and cared for very similarly to diamonds.
  • Measured as even more brilliant than diamonds, moissanite sparkles and shines. To the untrained eye it looks like a beautiful diamond.
  • Moissanite is a fraction of the cost of comparably sized diamonds, and is a good alternative to diamonds where strong ethics concerns make it's synthesized rather than mined origins preferable.
  • Mossainite is graded by GIA trained experts with standards similar to those used for grading diamonds.
  • Moissanite is measured in millimeters rather than carats because moissanite is naturally lighter in weight than a like sized diamond. Where a 6.5 mm round diamond would weigh approximately one carat, a moissanite with the exact same dimensions would weigh about 10% less.
  • Charles and Colvard branded Moissanite comes with a Limited Lifetime Warranty which guarantees that your moissanite will never lose its fire & brilliance, and will maintain its color. Ben Garelick offers Charles and Colvard Forever One Moissanites for this reason. Our sparkle specialists are no less selective with moissanite. As with a diamond, if we are unhappy with the color or brilliance of a moissanite we will send it back rather than pass it along to our customer.
  • Moissanite is included in the Ben Garelick lifetime trade up program. This means that if you select a moissanite now, but choose to replace it in the future, Ben Garelick will give you the full purchase price back toward your upgraded stone.
