When it comes to wedding rings, there are two prevalent metals that most people know about: gold and platinum.

These metals have been used in wedding bands for centuries due to their precious value and strength.

But it seems there’s a new kid on the block – Tungsten!

You might be thinking, “what even is tungsten?” or you may already be on the market for a tungsten ring.

In this blog, we’ll break down what tungsten is, why it’s getting popular and why you might want to consider it for your wedding band.

Firstly, what comprises a tungsten ring?

Tungsten is a naturally forming metal found on earth that is rare. It has the elemental symbol of W and an atomic number of 74. It can also be referred to as wolfram!

Tungsten carbide is the composition of tungsten with carbon as the alloy and is commonly used in wedding rings. Tungsten is a hard and dense metal with a high melting point, making it suitable for durability and long wear.

When combined, tungsten carbide has a deep gray appearance in its color, but there are many wedding ring designs where the metal is polished to give it a shinier appearance. It can also be sandblasted or carved to provide a unique design.

Due to the combination of tungsten and carbon, they are also incredibly strong, tarnish-resistant, and hypoallergenic, making them a great choice for people with skin sensitivities. They are also known to hold their polish forever!

Why Are People Choosing Tungsten?

Tungsten is Strong and Reliable

Tungsten wedding rings are a prime choice for grooms due to their strength and durability. They can withstand hardship and varying conditions without getting damaged, making them an ideal choice for anyone working with their hands.

Tungsten wedding rings are designed to last, its hardness being one of the properties that indicate the longevity of the metal.

For a ring you will be wearing every day for the rest of your life, this makes choosing tungsten as your metal an excellent investment as you almost definitely won’t need to replace it later.

Tungsten is Low Maintenance

Tungsten wedding rings require very little maintenance. In fact, if you were never to take it off again, it’ll probably be fine. Though we always recommend some maintenance!

This is because tungsten wedding rings are scratch resistant and can take a lot of wear without tarnishing. Their polish lasts years without becoming dull like other metals such as gold or silver.

Tungsten rings are also strong enough to withstand any warping, so the shape of your ring will stay the same for years to come as well.

All these points mean less money spent on reshaping or cleaning efforts with a jeweler!

Tungsten is a cheaper option

Wedding rings can get expensive! Especially when looking at 18k and 22k gold or platinum options. Tungsten wedding rings are some of the more affordable wedding rings on the market and can run as low as a couple of hundred dollars.

This means you can likely find a tungsten wedding ring to fit all budgets.

Tungsten wedding rings only begin to increase in price depending on the inlay set in your ring. For instance, if you want to add diamonds, you’ll expect to pay higher than for a more straightforward tungsten ring design.

Tungsten is Hypoallergenic

If you are prone to skin allergies, finding a jewelry metal that doesn’t cause a reaction can be impossible. Thankfully, tungsten is hypoallergenic, which most likely won’t trigger an allergic reaction.

People sensitive to metals such as gold find that tungsten is a great alternative that doesn’t jeopardize their health.

As with all things, if you have health concerns, it is always best to consult a doctor before trying a new metal to be safe!

Tungsten will never need to be Polished

And we mean never!

A tungsten carbide wedding ring can be permanently polished and will remain to look the same as the day you bought it for an eternity. This means you’ll save a heap of money not having to get your ring polished every few years.

Things To Keep in Mind When Buying a Tungsten Ring

Tungsten Rings Cannot Be Re-Sized

One thing to watch out for when buying a tungsten wedding ring is that it cannot be resized as other metals can. This is because tungsten is incredibly hard, so once it is set, there is no going back.

It is essential to get the correct ring size for the finger you will be wearing it on, and given the nature of tungsten, it is likely best to get your finger sized with a jeweler, to be certain.

We recommend trying a fitting size and a quarter to one-half size up to see which is best. Remember, our fingers shrink and expand in different weather conditions, so you want to ensure it will always be comfortable.

Tungsten is Heavy

Because of their density and hardness, tungsten rings pack some weight. Depending on your personal preference, you may enjoy a weightier feel or feel that it is too much and gets in the way.

It's best to try before you buy to get a feel for tungsten's weight. Come to the Ben Garelick showroom, where you can try on various tungsten rings and see which is right for you!

How To Clean & Take Care of Your Tungsten Ring

As mentioned throughout this blog, tungsten requires little to no maintenance, so you don’t have to do anything to clean or take care of it.

If it does become dirty, you can soak it in warm soapy water and wipe it with a dry cloth, but other than that, it should last a lifetime with very little maintenance.

One thing to be cautious of with a tungsten ring is not to drop it on hard surfaces, especially cement or marble. This impact could cause the ring to crack, a bit like a china cup and cannot be repaired.

While difficult to do, they can also scratch when put under very high pressure, so still be wary in situations where this could arise!
