Ben Garelick is Proud To Be An Eco-Friendly Jeweler
Eco-Friendly Tips for Going Green
Ever throw away that pizza box in your office recycling? Still going through plastic water bottles? Using standard cardboard shipping boxes? If you’re guilty, no worries. Your favorite Buffalo, New York, jewelry experts are here with going green best practices for your office and home. Ben Garelick Jewelers has been helping people just like you find the perfect diamond engagement ring and wedding bands, and the perfect fine jewelry gifts for Mother’s Day, Valentine’s and other special occasions for generations. And we want our world to still be here for our generations of jewelry family members to come. We are trying to do our part by running an eco-friendly store at our Buffalo, New York, jewelry showroom and we’d like to share a few our environmentally friendly initiatives.
What NOT To Put In Recycling
Believe it or not, there is an overload of things put in recycling that have to be taken out by hand at the recycling center, delaying the process and costing money. Here’s a short list of things that some us had been putting in our recycling bin that we shouldn’t. We list them here in hopes you will help your office employees or family get better at going green:
- Greasy pizza boxes, or anything with food remains on it
- Styrofoam take-out containers or anything made from Styrofoam or ANY plastic takeout container unless it is rinsed thoroughly
- Your favorite store’s thin, plastic bags (we all seriously need to be asking for paper or, better yet, bringing out own reusable bags!)
- Brightly colored paper
- Aerosol cans
- Office cleaner bottles - or any type of cleaning supply containers
- Disposable coffee cups (unless specifically marked recyclable) or any coated cardboard drink containers
- Napkins or paper towels or wet paper because of what they might have absorbed something besides water, and tissue...for the same reason.
- Shredded paper: While most plain paper can be recycled, it's hard for recycling centers to determine the type of paper if it's shredded. However, you can use the shredded, plain paper in your compost or mulch
- Tyvek shipping envelopes like the ones used by the post office and overnight delivery companies.
Lose The Water Bottles
We love staying hydrated and drinking lots of water, but the earth definitely doesn’t love those 60-plus million plastic bottles that end up in landfills and incinerators every day. That’s a total of about 22 billion water bottles a year! Not only that, packaging water in plastic bottles produces carbon emissions and greenhouse gasses. That’s why we’ve switched to BoxedWater.com in our Buffalo store. By using paper, a renewable resource, Boxed Water is more sustainable and better for the planet.
Compost Your Food Waste
Believe it or not, you don’t have to throw your food waste in the trash! We’re using a great company right here in Buffalo called Farm Pirates to help us be eco-friendly with our waste. They turn our trash into nutrient-filled compost to be used by local farmers & gardeners. Composting is great for everyone because it:
- Saves space in landfills
- Supports local businesses
- Encourages sustainable agriculture
- Makes soil and plant fertility better, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides.
Farm Pirates will even PICK UP your waste with its weekly residential and commercial compost pickup service! How easy is that!?
Use Renewable Energy Through Arcadia
We’ve connected with the Arcadia platform to support wind farms and renewable energy while saving us money on our utilities. It’s open to anyone across the country, free to sign up and there are no changes to your energy service. You’ll just be using renewable energy and receiving a more sustainable bill. The more who sign up the bigger impact we can make. If you’re not familiar with the company, we encourage you to check it out.
Support 4ocean Through Bracelet Sales
Everyone knows that Ben Garelick Jewelers carries the finest diamond engagement rings and fine jewelry in the country, but now they know they can also purchase an accessory that helps save our oceans from the horrific effects of plastic on our ocean ecosystem. We sell 4ocean bracelets and for every one purchased, you’re removing one pound of trash from the ocean and coastlines. Since 2017, 4ocean employees have removed 4,184,101 plus pounds of trash from the ocean and coastlines through the sale of their products. The bracelets are unisex and are certified made from ocean plastic that 4ocean employees have recovered. We love wearing them and so do our customers!
Use Recyclable Shipping Packaging
One of the big ways most businesses can become more eco-friendly is to find a way to use recyclable shipping materials. At Ben Garelick Jewelers, we use EcoEnclose for all of our shipping supplies in order to provide sustainable packaging to our customers. We also re-use shipping supplies from other local shops that don't have a use for them (after their initial use). These materials have more life in them and we hope that you re-use them again so we keep them out of a landfill.
Repurpose Your Old Corks
Did you know that every year, the equivalent of over 31 billion bottles of wine are consumed worldwide? That's a lot of corks! Ben Garelick is proud to be a collection partner in ReCORK's cork recycling program. If you live in the Buffalo, NY area, simply stop by our store during business hours and drop off your corks and Ben Garelick will ship back your corks to ReCORK so they can be ground into new products. Don't worry, we wait until we have at least 15lbs of corks (approximately 1250 corks) as this is the threshold for environmentally efficient shipments.
Offering Eco-Friendly Moissanite
This is one that everyone can’t do, but it’s something we’re quite proud of at Ben Garelick. We’re one of the few jewelers in the country that allows you to choose a moissanite gemstone instead of a diamond as the center stone in almost all of our designer engagement ring designs. Moissanite is made from a substance that is rare and naturally occurring but most of today’s moissanite is created in a laboratory setting. It’s an earth-friendlier and conflict-free gemstone and many of our customers choose it because of its close resemblance to a diamond and the fact that it is about 1/10th the cost of an equal size diamond. Being able to have the option for a moissanite center stone means brides-to-be are able to enjoy the engagement ring designs of all our world renowned jewelry designers like Kirk Kara, Gabriel, and Simon G. and still keep the cost within their budget.
