When it comes to the wedding day, many couples want everything to be perfect. They want to make sure that everyone at the ceremony is dressed appropriately and most importantly, that their rings are appropriate for each other.

The bride’s ring usually gets the most attention…

But what about the groom's ring? Who is supposed to buy it?

Many factors come into play, including whether you want to be traditional, take a modern approach or if you're a same-sex couple and have two grooms’ rings to buy!

There’s also the question of what style of ring to buy!

Let’s talk about who is supposed to buy the groom’s ring…

Traditionally, couples choose matching wedding bands, but who buys them?

A wedding ring is a symbol of love and commitment, so it's no surprise couples often choose matching rings. Beyond that, who buys what?

Traditionally, the bride-to-be buys her groom's ring in advance of the wedding day. This is often done when they first get engaged or months before the big day!

Suppose you’re a bride-to-be looking for your groom’s perfect wedding band, but you can’t decide what suits him best.

In that case, you can use our try-on at-home service to see the rings for yourself, or you can come to the Ben Garelick showroom, where you can look at all the varieties of groom wedding bands we have to offer, and we can advise you on what might suit his style best.

What if tradition isn’t your thing, and you prefer a more modern approach?

There are no set rules as to who has to buy any of the wedding bands. If you prefer to change things up and go for a modern approach, you can buy them however you like!

You could look at buying your ring; this way, you know you are picking a style you like and will love for years to come. Plus no hard feelings if your partner buys you a ring you don’t like.

You can make a day of it and choose your rings together; this way, you can match the styles, metals, and designs. You could even consider getting them both engraved with something significant like your wedding day, the day you got engaged, or a song lyric that means something to you both.

You can also look to split the cost of your rings so that the expense is even and fair on both sides - after all, love is about sharing!

What if we’re a same-sex couple?

Well, in this case, two grooms and two rings are to be bought!

And much like the traditional and non-traditional ring-buying etiquette, you can choose who buys whose ring.

So, you may want to match your rings and therefore shopping for them together would make perfect sense; you can also split the cost between you both this way.

You can also stick to tradition and buy each other rings to show your love and how much you understand your partner.

Or if you don’t trust that your partner best knows your style, you can find your perfect wedding ring - it’s whatever works best for you both and makes you happiest.

Choosing the Right Wedding Band for a Groom

Many grooms often prefer a more straightforward design, but only sometimes!

Groom's rings can be plain, ornate, simple, or embellished with diamonds. They can be plain gold or platinum and have no stones at all.

Some men like to mix metals for their wedding band, with a yellow-gold band set off by an intricately engraved scrollwork pattern on either side.

Some men prefer the traditional style of wearing their wedding rings on their left-hand ring finger, but others may choose to wear them on their right-hand middle finger so as not to interfere with other jewelry if this is more comfortable for them.

Stronger, more durable metals such as tungsten, titanium and platinum are always popular amongst grooms mainly for their hardwearing exteriors but also because they are stylish and modern.
