When we think about our wedding day, we’re probably thinking of a big, sparkly solitaire diamond engagement ring.

White dress, father of the bride, bouquets of flowers everywhere, confetti being thrown, and family gathering to celebrate the love shared between two people.

But what about the wedding rings – you mustn’t forget the wedding rings!

This brings us to the wedding band – a classic and timeless piece of jewelry as classic and timeless as the wedding itself.

The most recognized symbol of marriage worldwide – let’s break down exactly what a classic wedding band is and everything you need to know about owning one.

What is a classic wedding band?

The classic wedding band is traditionally a gold or gold-colored ring or band that is exchanged between couples on their wedding day.

It is usually worn on the fourth finger of the left hand – widely accepted to be the ring finger in most cultures, but this isn’t always the case.

The wedding band is worn by both the bride and the groom, unlike its counterpart, the engagement ring, which is usually only reserved for the bride to wear and is given as part of the marriage proposal.

The wedding bands, however, are usually given during the wedding ceremony and placed on each partner's ring finger after each says their vows.

The wedding band is a symbol of the lasting commitment and vows that are shared between the couple.

It is thought the ring shape signifies their eternal love and that being placed on the fourth finger of the left hand, this finger possesses the vein that runs directly to the heart.

Wedding bands have been traditions for hundreds, if not thousands of years, but it was figured that they gained their higher popularity from the Victorian era onwards.

This is because jewelry became easier to mass produce, especially using lower percentages of gold.

It was great because it meant more people could afford rings with around 10kt of gold that still looked wonderful and was the perfect symbol of love.

That tradition carried on perfectly, as now many married couples wear a wedding band.

Shall we look at the types of classic wedding bands you can get?

Types of Classic Wedding Band

Plain Gold Band – Let’s kick it off with the most classic of all the wedding bands, the plain gold band.

The simple gold band is so popular because of its design, which works for males and females and allows it to get in lower and higher karats of gold.

This makes it more accessible to all types of budgets.

The classic gold band’s simple design and color also match more personality types and styles. Many couples like to opt for the gold wedding band as they can match one another, a lovely tradition that symbolizes the connection between two people.

Unique Classic Wedding Bands – Just because they are classic doesn’t mean you can’t add a touch of spice to the design of your wedding band.

Many brides and grooms like to showcase their individual flare by adding diamonds in channel settings or prongs; sometimes, they go for more adventurous metals.Tantalum and titanium are popular ring metals for men due to their solid and robust nature.

After all, your wedding band is the one piece of jewelry you intend to wear for a lifetime, so you may as well show off your unique style.

Eternity Rings – And wedding bands aren’t the only classic ring you’ll come across. The eternity band has long been a part of wedding culture and tradition. It is often given after the wedding itself, however, and generally signifies a momentous occasion such as an anniversary when it is given, but this isn’t always strictly the case.

Eternity rings are usually designed as a simple gold band, or different metal of your choosing, much like the classic wedding band. The main difference is that they typically come adorned with beautiful diamonds around the entirety of the ring.

They look stunning, stacked with a wedding band and engagement ring – and if you want to know more about stacking wedding and engagement rings, check out our blog on just that!

Classic Diamond Ring – The classic diamond ring with a gorgeous sparkling stone sitting center stage is usually the bride-to-be's dream. Reserved usually as the engagement ring, classic diamond rings can come in several shaped diamonds and settings.

Depending on your style and preference, you may want to stick with just one diamond, or perhaps you’d like to go for three. As mentioned above, you can even have diamonds in a classic wedding band. With the invention of lab-grown diamonds, it’s also possible to have a diamond in your ring with almost any budget. And we believe everyone deserves to sparkle!

Sapphire Ring and Other Vintage Designs – Sapphires are some of the most stunning central stones that can be placed in a ring. Their classic royal blue color looks magnificent when adorned with a frame of white diamonds and makes for a showstopper.

The Sapphire is also the perfect diamond wedding band to pair with an eternity ring and classic wedding band. If you want to stick with the vintage theme, how about an Edwardian ring that is simpler and elegant in design? They are usually made from gold, with filigree, or milgrain details.

Georgian rings are also exquisite in their Grecian-inspired designs, often with emblems of leaves, wheat, or flowers; they have an extra level of femininity. If you fancy something a tad more modern, you might be interested in an Art Nouveau or Art Deco ring, much like the era they resonate with; these beautiful rings are inspired by clean lines and geometric shapes usually designed in gold.

Things to keep in mind while choosing the right band

When choosing the right wedding band for you, there is still a lot to consider.

Style – What do you like? This is a personal choice and an item that will travel with you throughout your life, through the ups and downs, through the magic and memories. You want to choose something significant to you; if you wish to opt for something classic or unique, this choice is yours.

Durability – Depending on what kind of work you do or what type of lifestyle you have, you want to consider the durability of your ring. If you work with your hands a lot, you’ll want to go for a lower karat of metal if choosing something like gold or a more robust metal such as tungsten or platinum.

If you type on a computer a lot, you also want to be wary of eternity rings that have diamonds all the way around, as the diamonds underneath may be subject to damage; consider opting for an eternity ring with diamonds halfway or three-quarters around the band instead. And, of course, if you are stacking your band, ensure all the metals in your ring stack are the same karat to stop any abrasion and damage when they rub together.

Comfort – With this in mind, how does the ring sit on your finger, and how does it feel to you? You will be wearing this ring day in and day out, so you want to ensure that comfort is at the top of your list. Come to the Ben Garelick showroom to try on your perfect classic wedding band, or try it on at home with our online service – this way, you’ll know how comfortable your ring will feel.

Symbolism – What does the design or style of the ring mean to you, and what does it symbolize? Different designs have different meanings; for instance, the color of a sapphire diamond is supposed to mean commitment. A ring doesn’t have to have a particular significance or symbolize anything, you can choose any design that makes you happy, but some people like to consider this when choosing their wedding bands. You may also wish to add an engraving to personalize your ring the extra bit more!

Price – The cost of a wedding band or ring can be as high or as low as you like; it is all determined by materials, stones, and designs. Know your budget and what you want to set aside for each ring.

Setting types for diamond set classic wedding bands

And what’s more, you want to choose the right setting for your wedding band!

Bar Set – Bar settings are usually a row of diamonds set within a rectangle-shaped band with a bar between each diamond.

Bead Set – A selection of round-cut diamonds usually sit in prongs along the wedding ring band.

Flush Set or Bezel Set – Where the diamonds are set within the body of the band’s metal and are flush.

Pave – A design that showcases the diamonds, usually in clusters, and you see very little of the metal in this style.

Why are wedding rings expensive?

As we have touched upon throughout this blog, wedding bands can be as expensive as you like.

But they can also be as affordable as you like; as the classic wedding band became more popular, it became easier for jewelers to design in different karats of metal, making them more affordable if you opt for a lower karat.

Price is also dependent on the overall design and if you wish to have diamonds set within your ring or not.

Thanks to the sheer popularity of wedding bands, you will surely find a ring that will suit almost any budget - and with Ben Garelick, you even have the option to finance your perfect ring with our 0% interest options.
